Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Luke Skywalker and Han Solo rescued the princess and destroyed the Death Star… BUT their story didn’t end there!

Brief Backstory

Star Wars: A New Hope changed filmmaking forever. But to George Lucas’s mind, why stop there? George Lucas was on a nasty power trip and decided to write up the tale of what happened after the events of the A New Hope, pitting the rebels being preyed on by the evil Galactic Empire.

While initial reception was not as high as A New Hope’s reception was in 1980, The Empire Strikes Back has grown to become one of THE greatest movies in history – around, if not, above the level of the classic Wizard of Oz. Years later, The Empire Strikes Back is often ranked as the greatest Star Wars movie of all time.

Story

Darth Sidious, as he first appeared prior to the 2004 DVD.

Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire kick the rebels out of Hoth, sending them scattered all over. Luke is ordered by the late Obi-Wan to visit Dagobah and find Yoda, while Han Solo, Leia, Chewbacca, and C3PO are trying to get away from the Empire. After a horrible prophecy invades Luke’s train of thought, Luke frantically makes a dash for Bespin to save his pals after the Empire hijacks control of Cloud City and forces Lando to do whatever they tell him to.

“4th amendment violation? The Supreme Court, tell that to!”

Random Facts

For nearly 25 years, Darth Sidious/Palpatine/Emperor (whatever the fuck you wanna call him) was voiced by the late Clive Revill. In 2004, this was changed to be more consistent with Palpatine’s voice.

As mentioned in the backstory section, The Empire Strikes Back is considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time.

The final bars of the credits theme were used for most Star Wars movie trailers after this one.

The Empire Strikes Back is the least action packed of the original trilogy – potentially even less action packed than The Phantom Menace. By action packed I reference battle scenes. The Empire Strikes Back only has the Hoth attack, the escape in the asteroid field, the Bespin escape, and Vader vs. Luke.

When released, the words “Episode V” likely confused audiences. For the re-release of A New Hope, the crawl for the original Star Wars was updated to include “Episode IV A NEW HOPE” in an effort to explain the standing of the series.

Out of the trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back had the least amount of changes in 1997. However when we’re talking necessary changes, I only can think of one, and that is where Luke says “this is it” during the Hoth attack. The Palpatine changes would’ve been fine if they didn’t change the dialogue.

Boba’s voice was different from Jango’s until the DVD release in 2004.

Go get ’em, Luke!

Random Opinions

Whatever that thing Luke’s munching on in Dagobah (it looks like a Slim Jim (one of my favorite things to snack on) or a sausage link) that thing is hunger inducing.

Although Luke’s bitching in Dagobah, I find his concerns reasonable. He barely escaped an attack from the Empire and he’s a little panicky.

Lando has no malicious intent here – he was coerced by the Empire the whole time.

The Tauntaun must be the Star Wars equivalent to the knight’s noble steed. Star Wars has in my eyes been far more medieval than say Star Trek (which I REALLY dislike)

During the 90s, mom and my siblings HATED this one. ONLY dad (very likely) and I were the ones who really enjoyed it. My siblings said it was boring, although I didn’t think it was boring. Empire Strikes Back as far as I remember isn’t as action packed as A New Hope or Return of the Jedi, and probably even The Phantom Menace if you count the pod race, but a good Star Wars movie doesn’t need constant action.

The imperial walkers (AKA AT-ATs) reminded me of Eeyore. Don’t ask why.

Contrary to George Lucas’s views, I view The Empire Strikes Back not as dark as Return of the Jedi.

You know what would be nice? A Star Wars story movie that was about the escape from Yavin. I liked Solo (which was a nice blend of Indiana Jones and Star Wars) and Rogue One way more than the sequel trilogy.

Yoda, accepting Luke’s offering.

Pros

  1. Do I even need to list it? This is considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time. The pros list would be too long if I listed every pro.
Lando, after having been had one too many times by the Empire.

Cons

  1. None, with a capital N.

Rating: 10/10 – Perfect

Like A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back has nothing that reduces its’ 100% score with me. Anything I’m critical of in the original trilogy is trivial.
