The Giant Claw (1957)
Look! Up in the sky! It’s a mummy! It’s a bat! No! It’s a shitty movie!!
Brief Backstory
Ed Wood wasn’t the only one who released poorly made movies. The Giant Claw, directed by Fred Sears, has been in the bucket of bad 50s movies for being cheap and fake.
Story
Mitch MacAfee detects something suspicious in the air, which turns out to be a huge bird that violates every single law in the flying book.
Random Facts
James Rolfe of Cinemassacre ranked the giant bird as the best giant monster, possibly as a joke.
Thunder sounds are possibly from Dumbo and Snow White.
Random Opinions
Build up? WHAT build up? The damn bird just comes out of nowhere, no explanation. Saying it was a UFO and the name of the bird’s species doesn’t build up to the monster itself!
Pros
- You can learn how not to make a horror movie by watching this.
- Laughably bad sounds and appearance of the bird.
Cons
- The bird is a joke. And I mean a joke. It’s just as scary as an angry Gus-Gus from Cinderella. I almost wonder what this film would’ve been like if James MacDonald voiced the bird and talked like Gus-Gus.
- There were already way too many “Godzilla” rip-offs, and some like the Giant Claw just comes up as one of the really bad ones.
- I think some of the scenes of the bird were reused, just like in War of the Worlds.
- Everyone calls the bird a flying battleship. Yeah no that’s the last thing that would come to mind.
Rating: 2/10 – Terrible
Man this movie’s for the birds. We’re probably all aware of how bad horror movies are nowadays, but the Giant Claw is just one example of a shitty horror movie and how not to make on. Hitchcock got the scariness of birds in the early 60s just after creating Psycho.

You assume modern Horror movies are bad? Care to explain Scream 1-6, X, It: Chapters 1-2, 2017-2019) Saw, Black Swan, Get Out & The Ring? Better fact check before jumping to conclusions.
