Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Oh god no!! Michael Myers isn’t in this one?! Worst! Halloween! Movie! EVER!!!
Brief Backstory
John Carpenter, having finished Halloween 1 and 2, wanted to turn the series more into an anthology instead of being Michael Myers comes back again and again. Unfortunately for him, that didn’t sit too well with critics.
Story
The crazy owner of Silver Shamrock Novelties, Cochran, wants to initiate a sacrificial ritual with children being killed with their Halloween masks. Challis goes to Silver Shamrock Novelties to investigate, only to witness an experiment for the ritual.
Random Facts
The Silver Shamrock jingle is used at the beginning of the power metal band Helloween’s song “Starlight” and has often been used as an intro to their concerts in the past.
Random Opinions
I liked this more than Halloween 1 since that was more or less just another version of Psycho. Halloween 2 was still better this though.
Cochran’s plan doesn’t seem to sound like it would work well. For one there’s the time zones, so for example if the whole bugs and snakes coming out of the Halloween masks was going on in Jacksonville, Florida, it would be all over the news very shortly in Houston or St. Louis and further west. It’s not like every kid in town had Silver Shamrock masks either.
So did the channel operator that Challis was alerting ever turn the big giveaway off? Who knows. He could’ve just rushed up to the TV and unplugged it or break it.
Home Alone had the same problem too with Home Alone 3. People hate it partially because there’s no Kevin McCallister or the wet/sticky bandits.
Pros
- I know a lot of people might look down on my view here, but it’s nice to have a Halloween movie without Michael Myers. He was a great villain but if they kept making more and more Michael Myers Halloween movies, it would get old fast. That’s why the James Bond movies don’t have the same villains every movie.
- I like the Bond-like approach that was done with Season of the Witch.
- Got a kid who watches too much television? Throw the scene of the kid getting killed with the mask on and it’ll solve the issue.
Cons
- Like I said earlier, Cochran’s plan isn’t actually well thought out. Even if it was fully successful he would’ve easily gotten caught.
- As a whole, the movie would’ve possibly been better if Halloween III was dropped from the title and it was just called Season of the Witch.
Rating: 7.5/10 – Good
Although this one isn’t as good as Halloween 2, I can’t agree that this one’s a bust. Think about how well the newer Halloween movies are doing and compare it to the animosity toward Season of the Witch. Should’ve stuck with the anthology way that Carpenter wanted to try out for his later Halloween movies.
