Carrie (1976)
Think twice before bullying.
Brief Backstory
One of – if not, the most insane novel writer ever existed, Stephen King, has been known for many horror novels from Cujo and The Shining. It’s no surprise though that many of his novels are ripe for adaptations, many of which are favorites for Halloween; and of course the first to get the adaptation treatment was Carrie, which has often ranked as one of the most disturbing horror movies of all time.
Story
Carrie White, abused by just about everyone (including her mother), is “invited” to a senior prom where she is pranked one-too-many times.
Random Facts
Chris Hargenson’s right about Miss Collins hitting her. Even in 1976 that was still considered assault.
Right before Carrie goes psycho the scene of the different voices in Carrie’s head was parodied in the Simpsons (the one where the power plant went on strike)
Not for kids. Not even close.
Random Opinions
I never went to prom. Popularity is overrated!
The ending seems pretty sad. Carrie has done nothing wrong but when she does, she is horrified by what she’s done.
Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame has some similarities with some of the scenes – prominently when Quasimodo was crowned king at the topsy turvy fest he was brutally humiliated, and Margaret White reminded me of Frollo; especially when she attempted to murder Carrie.
Pros
- Though I don’t condone revenge, those brats got what they deserved. Although murder was unnecessary.
- The entire part where Carrie “literally” brings down the house at the end and also at the prom deserved to be famous scenes from this classic.
Cons
- This movie moves at quite a slow pace. For some of the scenes like at the prom where Carrie is crowned queen, it makes sense, but for the majority of the slow paced scenes like when Carrie murders her mother in self defense, it goes more like filler.
- Hello nudity!! A little censorship on the naked Carrie would’ve been nice – cover the chest area!! I’m not a fan of that kind of stuff.
Rating: 8/10 – Great
Despite the slow pace, Carrie is a must watch for those who really need to get their scare on – just don’t show this to the kids!!
Dedicated to Piper Laurie (1932-2023)
