The Bad Batch: Aftermath (2021)
Watch out bad Empire, the Bad Batch is going to strike back!
Brief Backstory
During production of Star Wars the Clone Wars (no relation to the awesome multiport game that came out in 2002), five clone troopers stuck out like a sore thumb (but not in a bad way) and were considered great characters. With the final season completed, another series was greenlighted known as the Bad Batch, and was critically acclaimed by many. The first episode was the length of a typical animated movie in the vain of the Disney Afternoon cartoons from the 80s and 90s.
Story
A quint clone army consisting of Hunter, Crosshair, Echo, Tech, and Wrecker, find themselves at ends when the Galactic Empire rises from the ashes of the Republic. After betraying the Empire, the Bad Batch is arrested and Crosshair is separated from the batch to become one of the Empire’s assassins.
Begins during the second half of Revenge of the Sith when General Grievous is killed and Darth Sidious orders the execution of all Jedi. The entire series takes place before Star Wars Rebels.
Random Facts
Although this is not considered a movie, I filed it under film reviews because of the run time. The film reviews section also include television movies.
Dee Bradley Baker voices all five of the Bad Batch much like how he voiced the Techies goblins in Dota 2 and voiced each of the trio differently.
Tarkin seems a little old for his appearance. His appearance is almost immediately after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
No Vader in this one. Actually I don’t think he appears in any of the episodes; the third season is still being made so him appearing might happen, but since James Earl Jones retired he should probably not have any lines for the most part.
Random Opinions
To the Kamino leaders – why would you ever have a command known as “Order 66” which tells the clone troopers to execute the Jedi leaders?
I find it interesting that Kamino was trying to side with the Empire the whole time.
Pros
- The Bad Batch members all are great characters.
- Crosshair didn’t belong in the Bad Batch; glad he became a villain for now.
- While CGI, this has the feeling of a classic Disney Afternoon cartoon pilot.
Cons
- Dialogue from Palpatine is just reused from Revenge of the Sith; it would’ve been nice to hear him continue announcing the reorganization of the Republic to the Empire.
- Tarkin was much younger in Revenge of the Sith than he is here; unless there was a massive jump in time between parts of the Aftermath then his appearance should’ve been younger.
Rating: 8.5/10 – Great
I haven’t seen the rest of the show but this is a great pilot. True it’s not technically a movie but given the 1 and 15 minute run time it can somewhat count for me.
