Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998)
Bundle up for some Batman.
Brief Backstory
Disney wasn’t the only company to do direct-to-video works. Warner Bros. in 1998 released an animated feature with the dark knight, facing off against Mr. Freeze. Compared to Batman & Robin, which came out not too long before, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero has been given good reception.
Story
Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze), is determined to save his wife, Nora, by taking Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) for an organ donor, using the sinister Dr. Gregory Belson to perform the lethal operation.
Random Facts
Takes place between the end of Batman TAS and the New Batman Adventures.
Isn’t Batgirl a little too young to be drinking? I didn’t go near alcohol until I was 21 – closer to 22 actually.
Mr. Freeze, unlike some of the other Batman villains, is a tragic villain like Vader. Batman TAS’s Heart of Ice and Deep Freeze episodes support this.
Random Opinions
This should’ve gone straight to theaters. It’s well written and much more enjoyable than Batman & Robin was.
I wonder who at Wayne Enterprises used for organ donations? Presumably someone who died.
Pros
- Great animation.
- Mr. Freeze’s portrayal in this movie (and the 90s series as a whole) is in my eyes the best.
- Action scenes, like in the animated series, are great.
- A major improvement over Batman & Robin.
- While some CGI is used, it blends well with the movie.
Cons
- No fight scene of Batman vs. Mr. Freeze. I was hoping for something like that, but oh well. Can’t win ’em all.
Rating: 9/10 – Amazing
Skip Batman & Robin and go straight to this. You won’t be needing to break out the Bud Ice with this one, but bring a tissue box since this one can be pretty sad.
