Truth or Square (2009)
Time to tell the truth on another horrible episode.
Brief Backstory
It was 2009, and of course Nickelodeon just had to celebrate SpongeBob’s 10th anniversary. The episode to celebrate 10 years was Truth or Square, an episode that claimed to announce things such as “revealing the formula” and “showing SpongeBob and Sandy getting married” only to be just another pathetic ratings grab while the dipshit Nickelodeon executives were busy getting high on meth and jerking off to SpongeBob porn. Some critics enjoyed the episode, but numerous viewers and critics gave nothing but hate-filled reviews to what is often considered to be one of the truly worst episodes of the show’s extensive lifespan.
Story
On the Eleventhy Seventh anniversary of the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward, are locked in the freezer and need to get out. Meanwhile Patchy’s trying to host a celebration of SpongeBob but fails miserably.
Random Facts
Ranked as the worst episode according to the top 20 worst SpongeBob episodes (fan-edition).
Apparently this is the first episode in widescreen, though that might not be true.
Often considered to be one of the worst episodes of the show, like Atlantis SquarePantis.
Random Opinions
Yeah let’s use a Christmas carol for a song for the Krusty Krab. That works so well.
Almost everything in this episode should’ve been restricted to DVD extras, not part of the episode.
God this episode is boring. I don’t think I can watch this without getting drunk off Icehouse Edge. I know I’ve been running the whole “so bad it leads to binge drinking” joke to the ground but that’s pretty much all one can think of when watching something like this.
Pros
- Least the flashbacks aren’t just callbacks to older episodes like Beavis and Butthead are Dead or those Simpsons clip shows.
Cons
- Like Atlantis SquarePantis, a lot of false advertising.
- Toilet paper?! Ketchup and mustard?! Is SpongeBob jumping on the crustaceous cheapskate bandwagon for decorating?! I wonder if this sends the health inspectors out to the Krusty Krab.
- Filler with a capital F. Even Atlantis SquarePantis didn’t have this much filler.
- So much of the plot is wasted on flashbacks.
- Boring as shit.
- Patchy the Pirate’s plot is pointless.
- Disgrace to Stephen Hillenburg.
- Unnecessary amount of celebrity cameos.
Rating: 1.5/10 – Rancid
Yeah I hate to be tough on these kinds of episodes, but it’s been almost 15 years and this one still ends up very high on my worst episodes list. Should not have been made.
Like Atlantis SquarePantis, only watchable while getting intoxicated.
