Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Tying the two ends together after nearly 30 years.

Brief Backstory

Finishing the lackluster prequel trilogy after two disappoints, George Lucas decided to take the third chapter, Revenge of the Sith, much more seriously than the previous chapters. After 28 years, the Star Wars saga was finally complete (to him) and the wait was over. While still second rate compared to the original trilogy, Revenge of the Sith was considered a major improvement over the first 2/3 of the prequel trilogy.

Story

Mace Windu, arresting Palpatine (Darth Sidious)

The Clone Wars begins to wind down with the death of General Grievous, but in the wrong way as Anakin joins the Sith as the horrible Darth Vader. Palpatine, now known as the mysterious Darth Sidious, turns the Republic into the Galactic Empire and orders the executions of all Jedi, forcing Obi-Wan and Yoda to hide away after Padme dies in childbirth.

Random Facts

Anakin (Darth Vader) only appears in his armor for a few scenes.

Unlike other Star Wars movies at the time, Revenge of the Sith was rated PG-13, presumably because of Anakin getting burned. Also possibly due to the Order 66 scene.

A lot of the material in Revenge of the Sith was in the works on paper in the 1970s such as Mustafar.

The second half of Revenge of the Sith’s atmosphere is similar to A New Hope with Obi-Wan’s appearance looking very similar to how he did in that movie and C3P0 now in his iconic gold colored plating. A ship resembling the Tantive IV (called the Tantive III) is seen as well.

Vader’s armor is somewhat like his in A New Hope.

After Anakin is burned, his head looks like how he looked in the end of Return of the Jedi.

Sidious’s speech as he declares the birth of the Galactic Empire is eerily similar to speeches by Adolf Hitler. Since the Empire was based on the Nazis, the resemblance checks.

The opening crawl is the only one that has an exclamation point (Rise of Skywalker does not count).

Random Opinions

I didn’t think this was very emotional, as it’s mostly just nearly 2 1/2 hours of answering questions.

Comparing quality to Disney animated features puts Revenge of the Sith around the Great Mouse Detective.

Several more scenes of Vader in his armor would’ve been nice or at least having the armored Vader threatening or killing people like he did in his other appearances. On the other side Vader had enough lines; he didn’t need to talk much.

Padme’s death from childbirth is why I’m against illegalizing abortions. A lot of women have died in childbirth, and while we all want children to be born, sometimes that newborn isn’t going to survive for very long and the mother could possibly pass away quickly.

I find it odd that Anakin would want to overthrow Palpatine. Is it due to him craving more power?

No, I do not consider the sequel trilogy to be canon or related to the other six movies. Nothing but bad fanfiction.

Pros

  1. More gritty and dark, giving a similar atmosphere to the original trilogy.
  2. Palpatine’s way of dragging Anakin to the Sith is done well with Palpatine knowing that the Jedi council wouldn’t make him a master.
  3. Great scenes that build up to Palpatine’s treachery.
  4. It was always interesting to see how Vader got his armor.
  5. Anakin massacring those boring separatists had to be done. It was more of an apology from George Lucas and in a good way.
  6. Still some funny lines, like “I will deal with this Jedi slime myself!” and some of Anakin’s lines like “Liar! You’re with him! You brought him here to kill me!”
  7. Opening crawl highlights the severity of the situation unlike the other two prequels.
  8. Jar Jar still appears, but he has been sidelined to being a background character and only has a single line. He’s most prominently seen at Padme’s funeral.

Cons

  1. Still some bad dialogue.
  2. Lightsaber duels are way too long. A lot of times it looks like the characters are doing ballet!
  3. Uneven pacing throughout the movie; some scenes go too fast and some go too slow. The ending after the Mustafar duel goes way too fast.
  4. A bunch of areas are just CGI worlds. Actually, as a whole, there’s way too much reliance on CGI. Because of this, Revenge of the Sith (like the other prequels) hasn’t aged well, typical of lates 90s and 2000s movies.
  5. Vader doesn’t make much of the little screen time he’s in armor. Rogue One, which also had little screen time for Vader at least made the most of his appearances.

Rating: 8.5/10 – Great

Unlike the other two prequels, Revenge of the Sith is actually done right for the most part. If anything, you might as well skip Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and go straight to Revenge of the Sith. Revenge of the Sith, unlike Rise of Skywalker (which is THE worst Star Wars movie – and no I will not be reviewing it or even look at it.), ends the trilogy on a good note despite its’ flaws.
