Robot Monster (1953)
Oh my god!! It’s a robot! And a monster!! Run away!!
Brief Backstory
After the release of successful movies involving terror from outer space like The Thing and Day the Earth Stood Still, it was only the beginning of a huge sci-fi craze known as the Atomic Age.
During this period, there were some god awful sci-fi horror movies that flooded the theaters, especially the drive-in theaters mostly because many directors who made some of these piles of space shit thought “hurr durr teenagers are stupid they’ll watch anything” and that’s why Robot Monster was made.
Story
Thanks to Ro-Man, there’s only a few humans left and he’s destined to eradicate the rest.
Random Facts
The director, Phil Tucker had a suicide attempt after how people gave such low ratings to this. He managed to redeem himself with better movies later onwards, so in this instance it’s more or less him trying his best at first.
Ro-Man appears after 7 minutes into the movie.
Random Opinions
I’m no director but one thing’s for sure: Wait for the movie to establish the setting and/or the conflict before you completely show the monster. Nightmare on Elm Street showed a bit of Freddy at the beginning, but not much until around 15 minutes later in the movie.
I almost wonder if my parents were ever exposed to this.
Pros
- So bad it’s funny.
Cons
- 7 minutes into the movie, the monster appears without anything leading up to it. That’s an awful way to start a horror movie – you can’t just throw the monster into the movie without a single second of build up. You have to set the tone and make the audience feel suspicious about the setting! Dracula (1931) took less time than that, but there was already some build up prior to him showing himself!
- Ro-Man is probably one of the worst monsters in movie history; it looks like a joke. If anything it looks like Donkey Kong wearing a helmet made from an old TV set.
- Horrible acting.
- Ro-Man appears WAY too much in the movie. Aren’t movies with monsters scarier if the monsters don’t appear often?
- Why is there footage of dinosaurs attacking each other?
Rating: 0/10 – Didn’t Try
I’m aware this is one of those so bad it’s good movies but I don’t see much enjoyment in watching bad movies all the time. It’s just something that’s only good for watching while trying to see how many cans of Bud Ice one can drink in a short period of time.
