Ben and Me

Disney loves their mice, don’t they?

Story

A church mouse, Amos, befriends a man named Benjamin Franklin, but is subjected to one-too-many times of abuse. When Thomas Jefferson is trying to figure out how to begin the Declaration of Independence’s preamble, Amos is up to the task to give some encouragement.

Random Facts

Sterling Holloway voiced another mouse 15+ years later, Roquefort from The Aristocats.

Unfortunately this isn’t on Disney Plus. Find a VCR and a copy of this under the Walt Disney Mini Classics lineup to see it.

Amos isn’t much different looking from Jaq when you look at his appearance. Disney had a bad habit of reusing character designs often.

Random Opinions

I’ll easily stick with classic John Wayne movies (El Dorado and Rio Lobo come to mind but I have no idea when I’ll get to ’em) for the 4th of July but this could be good for a “in-between” movies short.

Been a little while since I saw this (maybe I should’ve put it back in the VCR before sharing my thoughts) but ironically there isn’t a lot of fife and drum music in this. As a beginner drummer (I was going to start out on orchestral drums as a stepping stone but was encouraged to stick with a drum set – even my parents aren’t surprised; seriously, why is a keyboard harder than a drum set?), I was a little surprised. But then again this needs another look.

I bet this is Stan Smith’s favorite animated short.

Not even a mouse can be had one-too-many times.

Pros

  1. Great humor.
  2. Elegant voice acting by Sterling Holloway.
  3. Other voice acting is top-notch.
Still more believable than FOX News.

Cons

  1. Some of the characters’ appearances are a little too similar-looking. I know Little John from Robin Hood looked similar to Baloo but he wasn’t (as far as I could tell) a full blown clone. The cat that chases Amos is pretty much just a recolor of Lucifer from Cinderella.
Benjamin Franklin’s pen – mightier than the sword. According to Stan Smith, the sword-gun is mightier, but I digress.

Rating: 8/10 – Great

I’m not too familiar with a lot of Independence Day themed shorts but this one is a great retelling of the birth of America.

I’m not familiar with all Disney animated shorts like Ben and Me. I don’t watch this every Fourth of July. I watch Independence Day every year as part of my Fourth of July tradition. It’s also one of my all-time favorite movies. I strongly recommend it.
