Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Marv and Harry return.
Brief Backstory
Home Alone was a huge success in 1990 when it came out to theaters, which encouraged John Hughes to make a second Home Alone movie, this time with Kevin in New York. Although reception was lower than Home Alone 1, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York still is often ranked up as one of the better Christmas movies of all time.
Story
Deja vu at its’ worst comes for the McCallisters when Kevin ends up on a flight to New York instead of Miami. While making the best out of a bad situation in New York, Kevin finds himself dealing with the bandits again, who are planning to heist Duncan’s Toy Chest.
Random Facts
Kevin’s bill would end up being $2000+ nowadays.
The Plaza was also where the Griffins were at in the early Family Guy episode “A Picture is Worth 1000 Bucks” when Chris was believed to be a successful artist.
Talkboy became a thing in the 90s after this came out.
The trap sequence is slightly longer than it was in Home Alone 1. Furthermore, the majority of the traps Kevin uses are much more lethal than previously.
King of the Hill would have an episode where Bobby steals Hank’s credit card and abuses it like Kevin did. Kevin helped his parents out by using the credit card though, so there’s that.
World Trade Center scenes have not been cut out surprisingly on television in most airings.
Raising Canes had a promotion with the 25th anniversary of this movie in 2017.
Random Opinions
I thought that Kevin’s family would learn not to be a dick toward him. Buzz deserved his room being wrecked in the first movie for gorging on Kevin’s pizza. The moral from the first movie is, you mistreat Kevin, he’ll find a way to get even.
The most notorious scene in the movie (Marv getting sniped with bricks) would have Marv dead from only one brick.
Some might call this blasphemy but I actually like Home Alone 2 way more than Home Alone 1. Part of this might be because I’ve seen this more than the first.
Pros
- The traps are much funnier and more creative.
- Great acting by Tim Curry and obviously everyone else that came back from Home Alone 1.
- Kevin is portrayed as much more selfless than he was before (he sort of already was in the first movie).
Cons
- Unlike other sequels, Home Alone 2 is structured too similar to its’ predecessor. This is a major issue with a lot of Disney’s cheapquels, however due to the overall better quality, it isn’t as much of an issue.
- Peter and Kate don’t seem to have learned their lesson from the first movie. In fact, most of the resolving from the first movie is null and voided with this.
Rating: 8.5/10 – Great
Despite the retreading, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is my personal favorite of the three Home Alone movies. Batman Returns is still my favorite Christmas movie.
