Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Wag a tail.

Brief Backstory

During the mid 1950s, CinemaScope became a growing trend. Movies were getting wider and audiences were seeing more than they used to. Disney, after releasing 14 movies, decided to change things up for their 15th movie and jump on the bandwagon with Lady and the Tramp. Critically panned at release, Lady and the Tramp has been often ranked as one of the finest Disney movies of all time.

Random Facts

Another childhood favorite of my mother’s. One time it was played on ABC nearly 20 years ago.

First of two movies in CinemaScope, which was a predecessor to today’s ratios. The format would not be used again for a Disney movie.

The Siamese Cats are often considered racist stereotypes.

The beaver is an early version of the gopher from Winnie the Pooh.

Recently got put on the National Film Registry.

Siamese Cats.

Random Opinions

Excluding any package movies, this is my least favorite of Walt’s works. Obviously not the worst Disney movie (Black Cauldron, Frozen, and Pocahontas are some that I don’t like as much), but it’s relatively weak compared to Peter Pan.

One of the sadder Disney movies out there. Maybe not as sad as Batman TAS’s Heart of Ice, but for some it can be pretty depressing.

I know that Disney movies have some cats that are nice like Dinah (Alice in Wonderland) and Oliver (Oliver and Company) but it feels like Disney has a hatred for cats overall.

No rats allowed.

Pros

Tony and Joe.
  1. Great animation.
  2. The Siamese cat song is a guilty pleasure. It’s catchy.

Cons

  1. Don’t even get me started on the dog pound scene. A dog is sent to be euthanized and before then there’s this really depressing song number of the dogs howling sadly.
  2. Aunt Sarah is one of the weakest Disney characters out there.
Have mercy, Disney!

Rating: 5.5/10 – Average

Like I said, this is my least favorite Disney movie that Walt directed (animated movies that is). Why does everyone like this one so much? I never got the appeal even when I first saw it years ago.

Lady and the Tramp’s a piece of crap. It didn’t make me cry. The last time a movie made me cry was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If you’ve seen it, you probably know why.
