SpongeBob, You’re Fired

SpongeBob, You’re Fired (2013)

Cheapy the crustaceous cheapskate at his worst.

Brief Backstory

Pizza on a bun. You know there does exist such a thing as pizza burgers, SpongeBob?

Failing to learn their lessons with Truth or Square, SpongeBob SquarePants found himself caught with his squarepants down again as the malevolent writers wrote up another episode that would make One Coarse Meal or even Atlantis SquarePantis look like Band Geeks.

This time, the writing staff decided to make an episode where SpongeBob was fired from the Krusty Krab. Only a few hours after airing, SpongeBob You’re Fired quickly became another artery clogging frustration-fest for the fanatics coincidentally like how Family Guy killed off Brian (see my page on Life of Brian) right around when this episode premiered.

To date, SpongeBob, You’re Fired has one of the lowest ratings of a SpongeBob episode.

Story

SpongeBob ends up unemployed after Mr. Krabs fires him to save a nickel (jackass). During his unemployment curse, he attempts to get another job until later on.

Merlin’s way of washing dishes triumphs over this.

Random Facts

FOX News (for gods sake why does that channel still exist) ended up pissing people off with this episode; something about stating that SpongeBob doesn’t freeload off of social services: (https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-friends/right-wing-media-use-spongebob-squarepants-firing-attack-social-safety-net)

This has been rated as one of the absolute worst episodes of the show ranking up with One Coarse Meal, Atlantis SquarePantis, Ink Lemonade, The Splinter, Pet Sitter Pat, and A Pal for Gary. Ironically, this episode does not have as low of a rating as some of the episodes mentioned.

Nick Studio 10, which was notorious for interrupting episodes (no really they did this) for something stupid and unfunny, got a quick look at this episode.

Often unseen on Nickelodeon due to how controversial this episode is.

SpongeBob’s made hot dogs before, so why he’s instead turning a full hot dog into tiny pieces on buns is beyond me.

Burrito on a bun, eaten the wrong way.

Random Opinions

Isn’t there a law against having fast food businesses close to each other in Bikini Bottom? I remember an episode (Move It Or Lose It?) that had something to do with that. I’m not counting the pizza place as one.

Who fires someone to save a nickel?! Mr. Krabs could’ve sent letters of recommendation to higher quality burger places, THEN fire him after he gets hired somewhere else.

Also fun fact: Firing someone over a single mistake is a first class example of being a shitty employer. Aren’t there any labor laws in Bikini Bottom?

If anyone should’ve been fired, Squidward deserves to be done so. Seniority isn’t a reason to not fire someone.

Remember that this is the same sponge that made bubble art, perfect circles, etc.

Pros

  1. “I hope his pepperoni falls off”
“Oh I’ll take it all right… I’ll take it to GO!!

Cons

Okay animators, enough is enough.
  1. Why was this hailed as a special episode? SpongeBob’s gotten fired several times:
    • Karate Choppers (Mr. Krabs accidentally thought SpongeBob was doing karate)
    • Squid on Strike (Squidward tricked SpongeBob into going on strike)
    • Welcome to the Chum Bucket (his contract was betted)
  2. The episode should’ve ended with SpongeBob telling Mr. Krabs off (which he has done so in the past, even assaulted him for not hiring Squidward back) and reporting him to the Bikini Bottom department of labor for wrongful termination.
  3. Probably the biggest middle finger to SpongeBob fans young and old.
  4. You want to talk about filler? This episode is 1% plot, 99% hot gas. Actually scratch that – 0% plot. I’m willing to bet that the people behind this episode spent most of the time masturbating.
  5. SpongeBob just puts buns on everything. No seriously that’s it. He can make snail food and there’s been other episodes where he cooked something that wasn’t a sandwich (i.e. Krusty Dogs).
  6. Fun-Employment? Really Patrick? You convinced SpongeBob to get hired at the Krusty Krab in the first place!

We get a really nasty close up of SpongeBob.Telling kids that unemployment is awesome? Why?The entire episode recycles plots from other episodes and adds as much filler as possibleA lot of it is SpongeBob crying or nothing happening. One thing I can give for this episode is that SpongeBob is near pre-movie in terms of behavior.

Rating: 6/50 – Rancid

I waited a decade to show some brief thoughts on this one, and it still sucks the big one. I’d rather watch Atlantis SquarePantis than watch this.

Also fuck Nick Studio 10 and the stupid brats that led that idiotic block.
